Ever since my parents made the ill-advised decision to show me South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut when I was in elementary school, I’ve been stubbornly passionate about the issue of censorship.
Combine this with a lifelong love of books and spending four years taking classes in a building with the first amendment across it (hi, Newhouse!) and you get a serious problem with book banning.
Problem: The banning of culturally significant works of literature for arbitrary reasons dilutes media literacy, critical thinking skills, and capacity for compassion in students across the country.
Big Idea: A series of minimalist book covers that redesign iconic classics—not based on their plots, but on the ludicrous, anti-intellectual reasons they’ve been banned in schools and libraries.
